Already have a list of series from another site? Turn each entry into a MangaBaka series id, trying the most exact method first. No account or key needed.
We'll map Frieren, which is 118586 on AniList and 126287 on MyAnimeList.
1. Look up by provider id#↑
If you have an id from AniList, MyAnimeList, Kitsu, MangaUpdates or Anime-Planet, start here. It is the most reliable match.
curl "https://api.mangabaka.org/v1/source/anilist/118586"
data.series holds the matching series. Here that is series 1995, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. The MyAnimeList id gives the same answer:
curl "https://api.mangabaka.org/v1/source/my-anime-list/126287"
| Site | Path | Id format |
|---|---|---|
| AniList | /v1/source/anilist/{id} |

| MyAnimeList | /v1/source/my-anime-list/{id} |

| Kitsu | /v1/source/kitsu/{id} |

| MangaUpdates | /v1/source/manga-updates/{id} |

| Anime-Planet | /v1/source/anime-planet/{id} |

Things to handle:
data.seriesis a list. One provider id can map to more than one MangaBaka series.- Only active series are listed. Add
with_merged_series=trueto see merged ones too. See Follow merged and deleted series. - An id MangaBaka does not know returns
404.
See Get series via AniList ID for the full response.
2. Match by title#↑
No provider id? Use Match a series by full title:
curl "https://api.mangabaka.org/v2/series/match?q=Sousou%20no%20Frieren"
This returns series 1995. Match checks every known title of a series, in any language, so the romanized Japanese title works as well as the English one.
How it behaves:
- The words must be spelled right and in the right order.
Sousou no Freirenreturns an emptydatawith status200. Match does not guess. - A short title can return several candidates, best first.
q=Frierenreturns the manga first, then related works such as novels, anthologies and fan comics. - Narrow it with the same filters as search, for example
type=manga. - There is no pagination and no total count.
curl "https://api.mangabaka.org/v2/series/match?q=Frieren&type=manga"
When match comes back empty, retry the same string with Search for series, which tolerates typos. Check the result by hand before you store it.
3. Match by ISBN#↑
If your list has ISBNs, use Look up works by identifier. Each work in data has a series_id.
curl "https://api.mangabaka.org/v1/works/identifiers?identifier=978-1-9747-2576-2"
This returns volume 1 of series 1995. Hyphens are stripped before matching, so 9781974725762 gives the same result. The ISBN-10 of the same book returns nothing, so send the ISBN-13 when you have it.
4. Store the id#↑
Store the MangaBaka id. Then check your stored ids from time to time for merges, as described in Follow merged and deleted series.
Next#↑
- Write to a library in bulk, to import the mapped ids into a library
- Follow merged and deleted series
- Rate limits and caching, before you map a long list
