The stories and characters revolve around each other. Chapter one: Shiki is Koto's master, who makes cosplay costumes for him to wear. Though Koto doesn't like dressing up, he still does it to please his master. Chapter two: Shiki's brother, the young master, Shuka, falls in love with the gardener of the house. It seems that the gardener doesn't want to be around Shuka much because he's the master though, but in the end... Chapter three: Brings the focus back to Shiki and Koto, the couple from chapter one. Chapter four: Story four is about the family doctor, Sakura-sensei, and his special patient Chigaya. Although Chigaya is always trying to seduce sensei, and asks him to make love with him since he's always loved him, Sakura-sensei doesn't want to do anything since he's worried about Chigaya's body. When Master Shiki sends him a cosplay outfit for Chigaya though, it seems that it takes effect on the doctor. Chapter five: Continues the story of Sakura-sensei and Chigaya from chapter four. Chapters six and seven: A story about a tiger and his master. The tiger becomes human, though still with ears and a tail, at the fault of his master. The master becomes sad over what he's done, however the tiger doesn't feel that way at all. He's happy being able to talk to his master and hug him like a human being would.

Serialized between 1996 and 2000, Boat Life stars novelist Tsuda Kenta, a lightly veiled stand-in for the artist, Tsuge Tadao, himself, as he pursues a life of reprieve and reverie on a small, makeshift house boat on a river outside of Tokyo. Based loosely on the artist’s own daily life, this charming story follows the hapless protagonist on a series of magical absurdist quests, featuring a panoply of personable characters, including a drunkard fisherman, a pervy monk, a talking corpse, a senile hermit, and a half-supportive, half-doubtful wife and adult son. Most of the scenes take place on the Tonegawa River in Chiba, a favorite fishing spot of Tsuge’s. Others occur at the artist’s home or at Joker, a jeans and apparel shop the Tsuges opened in 1977. While fans of Trash Market and Slum Wolf will enjoy this late-career elaboration of après-guerre themes Tsuge has been exploring since his debut in the legendary alt-manga magazine Garo in the late ‘60s, fans of his brother Tsuge Yoshiharu’s The Man Without Talent will appreciate the more relaxed and optimistic take on middle-aged reclusion and the grind of work and family.
