The first volume of Sorcerous Stabber Orphen was released in 2005 by ADV Manga. It tells us about Azalie, Orphen's love-interest, and best friend from six years ago, much sooner than the anime does. In the first manga we are told almost exactly what the eighth episode (titled "Azalie") of Sorcerous Stabber Orphen tells us about her. Matsushita Tadashi is a second year student at Kangokou High School (in Osaka, Japan) and a constant target of Kangokou's numerous bullies who beat him up routinely after school. He is accompanied by his best friend Saitou Takaki, who is also constantly harassed. As the pair grow increasingly tired of being victimized they decide to join the titular Karate Club, which is notorious throughout Osaka's youth gangs for training and producing the city's most hardened and toughest teenage thugs while maintaining the facade of a legit school sports club. But when they join the club, they find themselves picked on just as much if not worse by the club's current members.
The omnibus manga collects a variety of stories about Osaka dwellers and the problems they face. It ran in Futabasha's Manga Action seinen magazine from 2005 to 2006 and again from 2008 onward. The manga won an award of excellence in the manga division of the 10th Media Arts Festival Awards in 2006, and it then won the Short Work Award in the 11th Annual Tezuka Cultural Prizes in the following year.
