Introducing Stacks

opened by Jippi (admin) 1 week, 2 days

 **Hello friends,**

[Stacks](/stacks) are here! A stack is a hand-picked list of series on one theme, like "time-loop manhwa", "short reads for a weekend" or the full Kono Manga ga Sugoi! ranking for a year.

This one started as a request over in POST!25, so thank you to everyone who voted and chimed in there.

You can find them under **Browse -> [Stacks](/stacks)** in the top menu.

> [!NOTE] > TL;DR: If you're familiar with MyAnimeList "Interest Stacks" then this is our version of that.

## :mag: Stacks know your library

This is the part I'm most excited about. Every stack shows up against _your_ library:

1. A bar and a chip per status, showing how much of the stack you've read, are reading, dropped or haven't touched yet 2. Upvote, save and follow 3. Notes from whoever made the stack, right on the card 4. Series hidden by your content settings keep their spot in the ranking, so the numbers still add up

The chips are filters, so picking **Not in library** shows you exactly what's left to read. You can also sort by your own status or by rating.

And when you find a few you want, **Add to library** lets you tick them and add them all in one go.

## :pencil: Making a stack

Hit **New stack** on [Stacks](/stacks) or [My stacks](/my/stacks), or use the new **Add to stack** button on any series page, e.g. MB!222

Pick a stack, choose where it goes in the ranking and write a note if you want to. Notes use the same editor as the forum, so spoilers (`spoiler`), links and `MB!` series references all work.

The editor is built for long lists, because reordering 80 entries one drag at a time is nobody's idea of fun:

- Drag and drop, or type a new rank straight into the number box - Tick several and **Move to #**, **To top** or **Remove** them together - Add series from search without leaving the editor - Nothing is saved until you press **Save**, and it warns you if you try to leave with unsaved changes

A few rules of the road:

- Stacks start as a **draft** only you can see. You can publish them as **public**, or **unlisted** if you only want to share the link - A stack needs at least 5 series to be published, and holds up to 100 - You set the stack's content rating. If more than 10% of the series are rated above it, it asks you to pick a higher one - Stacks can be marked as **spoilers**, which blurs the covers in listings and puts a warning in front of the entries

## :bell: Follow a stack

Follow a stack and you get **one** notification when it changes, sent once the owner is done editing. Not one per added series. You can turn it off, or send it to your Discord DMs, under [Notifications](/my/notifications).

Everything you made, saved and follow lives in [My stacks](/my/stacks) in the **Library** menu.

## :books: Stacks on series pages

Series pages now show which stacks they're in, and there's a new **Stacks** tab with all of them.

Your public stacks show up in a new **Stacks** tab on your profile too.

## :iphone: On your phone

Everything above works on phones as well.

## :robot: API

Stacks are in the public API from day one, including creating and editing your own through `/v2/my/stacks` with the new `stack.read` and `stack.write` OAuth scopes.

[_See the API Explorer for full details_](/data/api/explorer)

## :crystal_ball: What's next

This is the first version, and there's a lot more we _could_ do. None of this is promised or dated, but here's what's on the whiteboard:

- **Trending and Top** lists on the Stacks page, plus searching stacks - **Co-authors**, so you can build a stack together with friends - **Community stacks**, where anyone can suggest a series and votes decide the order - **Official award stacks** with badges on series pages, like "Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2026 #4", and a view of what changed from last year - **Importing** a MAL stack, an AniList custom list or one of your library lists as a stack - Stacks **picked for you** based on your library, and stacks you're close to finishing

Have an idea, or something looks off? Let us know in the [Inbox](/forum/mangabaka/inbox).

## Wait, don't we already have lists?

Sort of! Library lists are folders for your own library. They help you organise what you're reading, only hold series that are already in your library, and are just for you.

Stacks are for sharing. A stack is a ranked list of series on one theme, with a note on each if you want, made for other people to browse, follow and work through. The series don't have to be in your library, and when someone else opens your stack, they see it against their library.

In short: a library list is how you keep track of your reading. A stack is how you tell everyone else what to read.

## :microscope: Doing our homework

Before building anything, we went through how stacks and lists work on about 10 other trackers plus some of the best list sites outside manga, like Letterboxd, Goodreads and Spotify. Then we read a lot of forum threads and Reddit posts about what people love and hate about them. A few things stood out:

- **Nobody shows you your own progress**. We didn't find a tracker that shows how much of someone else's list you've already read, and finishing lists is one of the things people enjoy most. That's why every stack shows up against your library. - **Reordering long lists is painful**. One Letterboxd user called it "torture". So the editor has drag and drop, typing a rank, and moving several entries at once. - **Small caps annoy people**. MAL stacks stop at 50 entries, and people have asked for more since launch day, often splitting lists into "part 2" and "part 3". We start at 100, and it's the same for everyone. - **Too many notifications get turned off**. Getting pinged for every single addition is spammy, so following a stack sends you one notification when the owner is done editing. - **Big lists bury the good ones**. On Letterboxd, the "every horror movie ever" lists and their 40 clones push the interesting themed lists out of sight. That's why the series page only shows the top few stacks, with the rest one click away in the Stacks tab. - **Open editing gets vandalised**. On Goodreads, one edit wiped "well over 200 books" from a list. Community stacks will take suggestions instead of open edits when they arrive.
