This is a two-part one-shot released to promote the eleventh Naruto movie, Boruto: Naruto the Movie. It is a collaboration between Masashi Kishimoto, author of Naruto, and Kenji Taira, author of Rock Lee's Springtime of Youth Full Power Ninja Chronicles and Sasuke Uchiha's Sharingan Legend. In the Kishimoto portion, Mitsuki discusses the heritage of the members of Team Konohamaru. In the Taira portion, Konohamaru gives his team a bell test. Kenji Taira's portion is included as a bonus Mini Manga 3 in Volume 2 of Sasuke Uchiha's Sharingan Legend.

The novel has three protagonists—Guy, Kakashi, and Mirai—and takes place at a hot spring. The novel "ties together Naruto and Boruto," and is set between the final chapter of the original Naruto manga and the Nanadaime Hokage to Akairo no Hanatsuzuki spin-off manga. Naruto Shinden is a light novel series which began publication with Konoha Shinden: Steam Ninja Scrolls in 2016, but was not formalized until it was relaunched with three additional novels that were released from May to July 2018, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Shueisha Jump jBooks. Konoha Shinden was originally meant to be part of a series that would help bridge Naruto and Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, but the 2018 relaunch shifted focus the two generations of parents and children.
