Moretsu Ataro is one of the four classic gag manga written and illustrated by Akatsuka Fujio. However, of the four it is probably the least popular. However, Ataro is also of the four slightly more plot focused than the others. While episodic, major changes to characters do happen throughout the series, one such that happens early on, and contributes the main premise of the manga, is the titular Ataro's father, Batsugoro, dies. However, his ghost is still remaining, as to assist Ataro in running the family's vegetable stand and protect it from various thieves or other antagonists. Aside from the main plot side characters also get a decent amount of time spent, such as Nyarome, a talking stray cat, whom would later become more popular than even Ataro and appear in some of Akatsuka's other works.

A collection of one-shots serialized in Shojo Comic (ShoComi) under the short-lived alternate penname Tomi Mutsuki. Common themes of this compilation include the hardships of young boys, accepting the truth, and youth psychology. 1. **Shishunfu** (思春譜): One winter morning, Michiru spots a girl playing tennis... tennis without a racket and ball, that is. Michiru joins her in this make-believe tennis. Gradually, he becomes interested in her, even if he may not want to admit it. 2. **Itsu Tobu no?** (いつ翔ぶの？): Keita falls from his hang glider into the yard of an eccentric young boy, Fu. Fu claims he's a bird, and acts like one. As they work to repair his hang glider, Keita discovers the tragic reason why. 3. **Midori no Hibi** (みどりの日び): Midori lives only with his older sister, a painter. Midori is enamored with the greenery around him, to where he believes they are alive. He conjures a muse, who he names Dori, and his sister begins to feel concerned that there is a gap between her and Midori... 4. **Biidama no Hoshi** (ビー玉の星): When his father dies, Keisuke is taken in by his aunt. Before he moves there, he buries his beloved, prized marble as a way to honor the childhood he has lost. Years later, Keisuke, now a ruffian, seeks out his lost marble, and he finds unexpected help in Akemi, a girl seen as a big sister to the others in her girls' dorm. 5. **Bara no Toride** (薔薇の砦): Yu comes to stay with her cousin Asami after her mother passes away. Yu and Asami have not seen each other in five years, so Asami is very excited to see Yu again. So is Mizuki, Asami's childhood friend. When Mizuki tosses a white rose Asami's way, a rift forms between the two, stirring up repugnant feelings... A tale of a love triangle, surrounded by the thorns of the yellow roses.
