**Amazon Fliptoon** (アマゾン フリップトゥーン) is a Japanese digital comics service operated by **Amazon**, specifically designed for full-color, vertically scrolling webtoon-style manga. It was launched in Japan on **March 7, 2023**, and is accessible directly through a web browser on smartphones and tablets without the need for a dedicated app.

The service is built around the mobile reading experience. Unlike traditional page-turn manga, Fliptoon titles are optimized to fit the entire screen of a device, allowing users to scroll vertically without zooming in or out. All content is presented in full color to provide an immersive reading experience. At launch, Amazon stated that the platform offered several hundred titles and over 10,000 episodes, with thousands of episodes available for free. The service covers popular webtoon genres such as romance, action, fantasy, and drama.

Fliptoon employs a "wait-to-read free" (待てば無料) model. While many works offer some episodes for free, for episodes marked with this label, users can unlock the next episode at no cost after a certain period (typically **23 hours**) has passed since viewing the previous one. Alternatively, users can choose to purchase episodes to continue reading without waiting.

Fliptoon operates as a hybrid platform that combines curated exclusive content with open self-publishing. From its launch, the platform has offered titles labeled as exclusive to Amazon in Japan. These include works provided by South Korean publishers such as **Rockin' KOREA**, as well as titles sourced from companies like **Kidari Studio** and **Lezhin Entertainment**. Amazon has benchmarked the paid model used by Korean webtoon companies and continues to add new titles and weekly episodes to its catalog. In addition to licensed content, any creator can publish their own original Fliptoon series directly through **Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP)**. Amazon does not require exclusivity for these self-published works, meaning creators can publish content that is already available on other services. To support this ecosystem, Amazon also organizes contests such as the **"Amazon Fliptoon Vertical Manga Award"** to encourage new creators.

Fliptoon represents Amazon's entry into Japan's rapidly growing digital comics market, which has been increasingly shaped by Korean-style vertical-scrolling webtoons. The market is currently dominated by **Piccoma** (operated by Kakao) and **Line Manga** (operated by Naver), which hold a near-duopoly. By launching Fliptoon, Amazon aims to compete in this space, leveraging its e-commerce and Kindle ecosystem to attract readers. Industry reports have also indicated that Amazon may consider expanding the Fliptoon format to other markets, including North America, following its Japanese launch.
