At the end of the Tianbao era of the Tang Dynasty, the An Lushan Rebellion broke out. The treacherous prime minister Yang Guozhong received a secret report from the front line. In order to investigate the "ghost soldiers" mentioned in the report, he dispatched two of his retainers, Xiao Chen and Xiao Yi, to the northwest. Xiao Chen and Xiao Yi were aliases; their real names were Tang Zhou and Tang Bugu. Originally the sons of the head of the Tang Sect in West Shu, they fled after their parents were killed in an internal power struggle within the sect. On the road, they met Yang Guozhong.
