Peace reigned in the heavens—specifically in Trāyastriṃśa, the second heaven of the Desire Realm. Its ruler, Śakra (better known as the Jade Emperor), suddenly falls ill and is confined to his bed. Consequently, all divine affairs concerning both the heavenly realm and the human world grind to a halt. Sensing that his life is drawing to a close, the Jade Emperor turns to his longtime friend and rival, the malevolent deity Asura. He asks Asura for a final favor: to eliminate the worldly desires and agonies (kleshas) rampant in the human world and to bring back his chosen successor. Meanwhile, at Eunjo High School—a strict Christian institution—a girl named Myeong is the school’s primary target for bullying. She spends her days enduring headaches caused by the low-level spirits and worldly agonies only she can see, resigned to the daily torment from her classmates.
