A few days ago, non-fiction writer Katsuragi Shiho came to see Shikibu Takeru at his office in Tokyo. She gave him the key to his apt. and asked him to take care of her things if she did not return from her trip in 3 days. Unfortunately, she did not return in 3 days, nor in 4. Even more mysteriously, nobody seemed to know where she had even gone. Worried, Takeru dug deeper and eventually found 2 witnesses that said they saw Shiho and another woman who looked her age ride the ferry to "Island Kokushi" near Kumamoto. Takeru sets off to try to find her there, but what awaits him is a strange island where nothing is what it seems. In a place haunted with old tradition, a strange religion, and several mysterious deaths, can Takeru find what really happened to his friend? This manga series is an adaptation of the novel series of the same title by Ono Fuyumi (author of Ghost Hunt) and has the same suspenseful horror story style. Also, please note that the word "Kokushi" is not easily translated b/c it seems to be a word created by Ono-sensei, but it sort of means something like "faith of a non-approved deity".

The story takes place in a particularly hot summer in the 1990s, in a small quiet Japanese village called Sotoba. The decrepit building was condemned long ago, but every time the owners try to tear it down, "accidents" start to happen-people get hurt, sometimes even killed. Mai Taniyama and her classmates have heard the rumors that the creepy old high school is haunted-possibly by ghosts from the Second World War. Ghost Hunt follows the adventures of Kazuya Shibuya, the president of the Shibuya Psychic Research Center (SPR) and Mai Taniyama, a first year high school student. The story begins during an exchange of ghost stories between Mai and her friends, who are interrupted twice: first by a mysterious "male student" and then by a fellow classmate, who warns them of how their ghost stories attract spirits. While out walking, Mai sees the building that all the ghost stories surround and decides to go in. As she is about to touch a camera she found in the middle of the room, a man stops her and ends up injuring himself. Mai is then forced to work as a stand-in assistant for the man, an employee of the "male student," who was hired to study the "paranormal" events occurring at the school. Mai nicknames this "student" "Naru" for his narcissistic attitude. Naru owns a paranormal investigation company SPR and Mai eventually earns a part-time job at SPR after assisting with the first case. The more involved Mai becomes with Naru, the more she learns about herself and her feelings towards him.
