Fujimoto Hiroya is at the top of his class. He's the Student Council Vice-President, spends all his time studying and is the idol of all the "good girls". But the truth is, he'd trade it all just for the chance to be someone else... someone popular, outgoing and carefree... Someone like Masaki. Masaki's what Fujimoto's friends would call an "idiot". He'd rather play soccer than study, almost never cracks a book, and is popular with all the "normal" kids. He's got flashy clothes, bleached hair and a reputation just a lousy as Fujimoto's is good. In the summer of Fujimoto's freshman year of high school, he resolves to change his image and his life... all to make friends with Masaki. But can dyed hair, new clothes and a piercing really change a person inside? Classic BL by the "dream-team" of novelist Koh Akizuki and mangaka Meiko Koide. Please note that this title deals very frankly with some rather "heavy" issues including, but not limited to homophobia, gay bashing, coming out, HIV/AIDS, promiscuous sex, rape, and suicide. Tamiya, a student whose honesty tends to be so blunt that it gets him in trouble, has fallen in love with Shirasaka, a teacher from his school. He's an excellent teacher, very caring and popular among students, but because of his dark past, there seems no hope for Tamiya to win over his heart. In the past, Shirasaka had a relationship with Iogi, his senior on the track team, and they were both in an accident which was Shirasaka's fault. Iogi became seriously injured and was forced to give up his athletic dreams. Since then Iogi has used Shirasaka's guilt to keep him close. Is there any chance for Shirasaka and Tamiya to be together? Jin and Yuu are pop singers in the duo CROSS. They've always been friends, but lately things have become different. Wataru and Makoto are in love and although they're a same-sex couple, they are recognized and accepted by most of their classmates. Perfect, right? Wataru doesn't think so. In fact, he feels completely uncomfortable with the thought of doing anything but kissing Makoto, and even those are hard to come by. Things put a strain on their relationship when Makoto, a very pretty boy who was always mistaken for a girl when he was younger, begins to feel a little fed up with Wataru's attitude and unconciously goes to his cram school teacher for help, who also happens to be gay. Wataru's hesitation was done very smoothly and Makoto's enthusiasm for intimacy is very entertaining to read although one can gradually feel his unease towards their unusual relationship. I also gave Koide plus points for the rapid improvement I saw in her art work (Makoto is much more of a "pretty boy" by chapter 3). There's a touch of angst, coupled with lots of humour, which makes for a very enjoyable read.
