When Moe moved from Kanami to the Kawato neighborhood after marriage, she was unpopular with her new family because of a series of failures, such as burning the rice and letting the yubeshi (sweet tofu) get moldy. Although she did not know it until she realized that she was being snubbed, her mother-in-law Fujiko is notorious as "the meanest lady in Kawato." Feeling depressed, Moe learns from the in-the-know wife Sayaka that she actually places fourth amongst the local ranking of the ten married women in the neighborhood.
