Agano Kokage is the oldest daughter in a 'ghost family.' Her family is supposedly half-spirit and half-human, and Kokage inherits the family's powers on the day she turns 14. She can now see ghosts, along with other abilities, which her mostly ineffectual grandmother's ghost attempts to teach her about. Long ago, her ancestors were able to travel freely between the physical and spirit world, but Kokage's grandmother's ghost tells her that if she allows herself to shift into a spirit, she can never come back to life. However, Kokage proves her grandmother wrong, when her childhood friend (and possibly crush), Toshiaki, successfully pulls her back into the physical world after she accidentally becomes a ghost. Kokage's ability attracts her another mentor, a highly skilled 'ghost family' woman called Shiine. Now Kokage faces a daily struggle to develop and learn how to control her abilities, and to deal with all the complications of middle school life, such as her confusing relationship with Toshiaki.
