Founded in 1958 as Jiangsu Literature and Art Publishing House (江苏文艺出版社), it later merged temporarily with Jiangsu People's Publishing House before re-establishing itself in 1985.

In April 2010, after becoming part of the Phoenix Publishing and Media Group, it officially adopted the name Jiangsu Phoenix Literature and Art Publishing House (江苏凤凰文艺出版社).
