In postwar Japan, a time when many people, hungry for printed words, formed long lines at bookstores, Tsubame Takanashi, a rookie editor at the small literary publishing house Nekorobido, is tasked with collecting the manuscript from the notoriously eccentric novelist, Nero Uguisudani. Tsubame eagerly visits Uguisudani's home, only to find that he refuses to hand over the manuscript unless he immediately buys him his favorite sweets.
