Whereas the main story of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED focuses on the struggles between the Earth Alliance, ZAFT, and Orb Union, the Astray series is focused on the three MBF-P0x mobile suit prototypes (however mainly on Lowe Guele) and their respective pilots and organizations, who mainly exist on the outskirts of the main SEED storyline. With the setting of Edo, we have that the more a wealthy a city grows, the more people will gather, and as a side effect more seeds of discord can easily be found. In one hand we have Shusuke, a slacker "almost" apprentice of a merchant with a rather large mouth who is pretty skilled in conversational skills and reading into people's intentions. In the other hand we have Rie, a gracious Yamato nadeshiko who is actually an expert swordsman who has dedicated her life to her skills, who works as a benriya or hired hand / jack of all trades. What have these two in common? Well, besides their very own interesting backgrounds, we have that the two of them are actually quite indebted towards the same person, which is Shuusuke's merchant "mentor" & Rie's landlord.
One day Shirogane Takeru wakes up late, wondering why Sumika or Meiya didn't wake him up that morning. Not seeing any signs of them he gets a bit worried, and goes out of his house only to see the town he lived all his life in ruins, and finds a giant robot destroyed outside of his house. After getting past the initial shock he convinces himself that it must be a dream and decides to enjoy it as much as he can. Soon he finds out the terrible truth behind the reason the world is in ruins, and meets people that look exactly like his friends from his original world.
The story revolves around Takumi Tsuzuki, a boy who lives with his older "sister" Otome, although the two have no blood ties between them. On his first day of high school, Yuuya Ochi is shocked to discover that the girl sitting in front of him in class is actually a guy named Shigemitsu Izumi. Some time after the events of Gundam EXA, Sthesia Awar informs Leos Alloy that she discovered a new GA data cluster from a computer outside of Jupiter X. The two dive into the new data and find themselves in the Universal Century, during the attack on Side 7. However, after entering the colony, they find that the inside was in ruins, and the RX-78-02 Gundam has been destroyed before it could be activated by Amuro Ray. The two discover a faint life sign in the colony, the source of which is Themis Chiron, a G-Diver from Saturn II. Chiron warns the two to get away as soon as possible, or they would be caught in the conquest of Mars I.
