A classic comedy mahjong manga about Toyotomi, a very unlucky mahjong player, and his three "friends", who will take advantage of him and try to ruin him whenever they can.
Furaton is a college student who is always trying to squeeze every penny from his adversaries, but ends up only getting beaten up or hated. One day, on his usual visit to a mahjong parlor, he meets Saruta Tooru, who he thinks of as being weak, so he tries to make him his next victim, only to get beaten up again. Furaton is found unconscious on the parlor's bathroom by a professional player named Tsumokura Tesu, who brings the owner, Amatori Chana, to help. After that, Furaton tries to squeeze some money out of Tesu, but loses tremendously to his "High Tide" style of play. Tesu tells Furaton that he lost because he looks down on others, and that the only way he'd be able to win was by playing with no rates. Furaton then decides to take the JMP exam to beat Tesu on the professional level.
Teppeki Tamotsu, Atari Daisuke, and Chuuren Potomi are college students who attended the same university and often played mahjong at the "Dora Douraku" parlor. One day, a man named Bakuoka Danjuurou (Nicknamed Bakudan) suddenly appeared in front of them. Teppeki and Daisuke tried to challenge Bakuoka, but they lost. After that, Bakuoka was recommended by an old man named Inase Kouichi to participate in the preliminary round of the Master's Tournament, one of the three major titles in the mahjong world. With his genius at reading his opponent's tiles and aiming for the excess tiles, which he named "Bakuhai", Bakuoka defeats various opponents and wins more titles. Is this "Bakuhai" really invincible? That's up to Teppeki to discover! (Source: Wikipedia Japan, translated and edited)
A Do-Topper is someone who can stand at the top of the raging wave that is mahjong, a game where even professionals can lose to amateurs. The story follows two of those Do-Toppers, Hiiragi and Kawara, as they manipulate the odds to their favor to become the ideal player, clashing with each other over different styles of play; only one can stand at the top of the mahjong world!
In this manga, we follow Mochizuki Dorao, a regular at the Iisuu Chii parlor (a play on the 1-4-7 suji and the word for the Souzu suit being the same used in "parlor") and a professional gambler who can always win no matter the opponent, as he plays against different opponents and visits different parlors — ones crazier than the previous ones —.
The story depicts the serious competition in the world of professional competitive mahjong between the "digital" school, which believes only in efficiency and probability, and the "occult" school, which believes in its own theories of unknown scientific basis, and the main character Natsuki, who belongs to neither of these groups.
The newest edition of Mahjong Primer, featuring all Katayama characters, teaches beginners how to go to a mahjong parlor by themselves and play mahjong. Features visually pleasing cartoons and easy-to-understand explanations. (Source: Kodansha, translated)
