Emma Lentier, 14, is spending a peaceful holiday at her grandfather’s home in Brittany when her picnic turns into a disaster: she is attacked by strange creatures with razor-sharp teeth. A mysterious girl with supernatural powers saves her at the last moment and senses a special gift within her. She then invites Emma to the floating Primeval Academy, where she can discover her true potential as an elementalist.

Yuki, a young deaf girl, is destined to lead her village, inheriting a long lineage. But in this superstitious community plagued by disasters, many see her deafness as a curse linked to the Hakutaku, a legendary creature accused of bringing misfortune. This includes her former friend Dai, who believes himself more capable of being leader and makes her life difficult. One day, Yuki meets the real Hakutaku in the woods. Far from being a monster, it protects the village from hostile forces and can even communicate with her through telepathy. As a storm approaches, Yuki and the Hakutaku join forces to save the village and to challenge the unfounded beliefs of its people.
