The story tells about Hiroshi Shiba, a car racer who is mortally wounded on a laboratory accident, but restored to life by his father, Professor Shiba, a talented scientist/archeologist, who is incidentally investigating the relics of the ancient Yamatai Kingdom. The professor discovers a tiny bronze bell with sorcerous powers, and shortly afterwards he is murdered by the henchmen of Queen Himika, the ruler of the Yamatai (sometimes translated as Jamatai) Kingdom, who wants to seize the ancient bell and its power.

After another day of school Seto Magami is walking home with Reito and Koji. However they meet two young women named Necro and Bui Jinga, earlier Mazinger android models who were also created by Juzo Magami and they pick a fight with Seto and Reito, ultimately overpowering them. They leave saying they won't be as merciful as they were. Meanwhile Grace and Shiko encounter their own doppelgangers in the form of Dark G. Dark and Shin Kotetsu who explain their intentions rather than fight. Necro recruits them to form the New Mazinger Army before getting into another brawl with the Mazinger Army. During the battle, Shiko and Shin accidentally fuse together to become Majeeg which became a problem for both sides so they decided to work together. But Majeeg proved to be too powerful for even their combined forces until Seto entered her Astro Mazinger form and after overpowering Majeeg purged the evil from it, freeing Shiko and Shin. Afterwards, both the Mazinger and New Mazinger live on (relatively) good terms.

It is 199X A.D. In Kushiro, Hokkaido, three bodies of Dragonite appear. Possessing overwhelming destructive force, they attack the city. Assuming that the warrior is dead, Drago and Empress Zara are free to conquer the Earth using their army of biomechanical beasts. Even the Japan Self-Defense Forces are no match for the Dragonites' awesome power. One of the people fleeing is the protagonist, a milquetoast 16 year old boy named Ken Taiga. Unbeknownst to the Dragonites, Ken realizes that he is the descendant of the Liger warrior. In a burst of anger, Ken's Liger birthmark appears, and he rises his palm into the air, shouting the henshin command, "LIGER!" which then covers him in demonic, long-haired biomechanical armor.
