One day, on his walk back home, he finds a black notebook with the English title "Death Note." As he only understands the meaning of "Note," Taro assumes it's an ordinary notebook and takes it home to use as a diary. To vent his frustrations, he writes in the diary about his day and details how two of his classmates bullied him. Shockingly, the very next day, he is informed that those two students died of heart attacks. When he learns the meaning of the word "Death," Taro starts to believe that the diary can kill whoever's name is written inside. The appearance of the shinigami Ryuk, the original owner of the Death Note who now stalks Taro, only confirms his theory. Now armed with this deadly weapon, Taro must decide what course of action he will take and whether he is capable of wielding such a disastrous power. *Note: The one-shot was later published as a bonus in the guidebook "Death Note Volume 13: How To Read", then later in the volume "Death Note: Tanpenshuu".*

One day, after leaving his notebook behind, he returns to school only to find the smartest guy in class, Takagi, waiting for him. Takagi is happy to return the book, but only on the condition that Mashiro agrees to become a mangaka with him. Though Mashiro initially declines, he soon decides to reconsider when he discovers that the girl he likes, Azuki, dreams of becoming a voice actress. But after promising that she can have the lead role if their manga is ever adapted into an anime, he inadvertently suggests that they get married once they are both successful! Born in a Bunraku family, Tachibana Sakon is trained to become a Bunraku puppet master. With a pretty face, timid character and such reliance and dependence on his puppet friend Ukon, no one would expect that he is the one his policewoman aunt Kaoruko would turn to when she faces perfect crimes. With Ukon on his hand, Sakon instantly changes from a timid boy into a careful, quiet, observant, calculating detective. Quite a contrast to Ukon, who is a chatterbox that is much more into popstars and talking to girls. This uncanny pair can see through the criminal`s plots as well as the victim's mind. As Sakon's grandfather once said: "Controlling a puppet is reading the heart. You have to put yourself in the shoes of the one you want to portray."
