Clannad is primarily set in a high school located in a small Japanese city. Clannad follows the life of Tomoya Okazaki, a third-year student who does not take his studies seriously. He hates his city and his everyday routine, while waiting for something that would bring color into his dull life. Always late for class, he is seen as a delinquent by the rest of his classmates who are busy preparing for their college entrance examinations. Needless to say, he does not have too many close friends either. One day, while walking to school, Tomoya passes by a frail girl muttering quietly to herself. Suddenly she exclaims "anpan" and catches his attention. A brief conversation follows and then both resume their walk towards the school.

Saya is part of a special prefectorial board that aims to eliminate a dark association and, in the process, she drags Riki Naoe into the mayhem as back-up! Riki, not quite sure what's going on, is pretty sure all this is a plot by his senior, Kyousuke Natsume. Will Riki be able to get out of all the madness or will he get himself killed before he even tries?

Little Busters!' story revolves around the main protagonist Riki Naoe, a young male high school student. When Riki was a child, his parents died, leaving him hopeless and depressed. What saved him was a group of three young boys and one girl his age who referred to themselves as the Little Busters — a group dedicated to fighting evil and preserving justice. The leader of the Little Busters was Kyousuke Natsume who had a younger sister named Rin. The other two members of the Little Busters were Masato Inohara and Kengo Miyazawa, who are rivals despite being friends. They took Riki out and played together with him during his time of need, effectively making him the fifth member of the Little Busters. In time, Riki really enjoyed playing with them, and his grief over his parents gradually faded away. When the story begins, Riki and his friends are seemingly in their second year of the high school they attend, except for Kyousuke who is in his third year. Okazaki Tomoya is a delinquent who finds life dull and believes he'll never amount to anything. Along with his friend Sunohara, he skips school and plans to waste his high school days away. He soon discovers the girl's name is Furukawa Nagisa and that she exclaims things she likes in order to motivate herself. Nagisa claims they are now friends, but Tomoya walks away passing the encounter off as nothing. However, Tomoya finds he is noticing Nagisa more and more around school. Eventually he concedes and befriends her. Tomoya learns Nagisa has been held back a year due to a severe illness and that her dream is to revive the school's drama club. Claiming he has nothing better to do, he decides to help her achieve this goal along with the help of four other girls. As Tomoya spends more time with the girls, he learns more about them and their problems.
