An early gekiga work of Tezuka, serialized in a newspaper. One night, a man with a mysterious trunk of gold comes to stay at a hotel. By the next morning, he has vanished, leaving behind his trunk. The man went by the name of Shunsuke Ohtori - but the name actually belonged to a reporter who had never went to that hotel. Shunsuke finds himself, along with some others, wrapped up in the mystery of the trunk. There are also several parties after the trunk for their own ulterior motives. Just who was that man, and what is inside the trunk?

"Fossil Island" is an omnibus story featuring the dreams of three travelers who visit Fossil Island. They are Rock, a newspaper reporter, Kodama, a songwriter, and Tezuka Osamu, a cartoonist. There are many strange rocks on the island that look like human figures. After they see the rocks, the travelers have strange dreams associated with the rocks. Rock dreams that he becomes partner to Sherlock Holmes and fights against the phantom thief Lepin for a hidden sculpture. In his dream, Tezuka Osamu, by eating ancient foods, goes to a world where humans have animal brains and animals have human brains. This work is a Manga aimed at adolescents, focusing on a young man who dreams of animated filmmaking, and puts his heart into it. In the meantime, Miyamoto Musashi meets a boy named Sasaki Kojiro, who also aspires to produce Manga films. Although they become friends instantly, they later part after a quarrel, and became rivals. After being provoked by yakuza, Musashi meets Otsu, a daughter of the leader of the yakuza family. In retaliation, the yakuza burns his 50,000 animated films and his movie equipment, and damages his eyes. The very first scene of this Manga is the entrance examination of the Manga College, which is followed by descriptions of tools given by the Principal. The explanation of how to use these tools leads to the first illustrative story. The first story is a story staged in the Civil War period of American history, in which Monster, who appeared in Angel Gunfighter, plays a villain. The second story is anecdotal: it is about a purse that can fulfill three wishes. The purse was given to Chieko, a poor farmer, by the deity of poverty.
