In Kyoto, in the late 1800s, the son of a local book-binder, Kyujuro Fukakusa sees his father murdered before his eyes and vows revenge. In his quest for justice, he answers the recruitment call of the Shinsengumi (or "The new squad") a newly-formed special brigade of samurai loyal to the shogun. "Grandoll" is a science fiction story whose theme is the invasion of Earth, featuring a boy's fight against aliens from outer space. One day on his way home from school he finds a girl's dead body on the street. While he goes to the police to report it, the girl's body disappears. Instead, he finds a strange doll there. Tetsuo brings the doll home and repairs the broken part. Then the doll instantly turns itself into the girl who appeared to be dead. It tells him that it is a "Grand doll," and that so is Tetsuo. A Grand doll looks just like an ordinary doll at first glance, but when rubbed on the neck, it turns into a human or a horse. When scratched on the neck, it becomes a doll again. It is the aliens from outer space who are scattering Grand dolls around the Earth. Actually, it is part of their plot to invade the Earth. When Tetsuo learns about this, he becomes determined to fight against the invaders with the help of his father, a newspaper reporter, and Yoko, his friend, despite the fear that he may be a Grand doll as well. Toshio Yamagata, a young elementary school student, sheds tears every time he listens to the record "The Swan of Tuonela". Kamiemon, whose street name is Kamiemon, is a rough and tumble samurai whom no one calls by his real name. He is ordered by the governor of Izumi to kill all the foxes, but begins to live with a female fox disguised as his beloved wife Okuzu. This is Tezuka's version of the "Kuzunoha" legend concerning the birth of the great scholar Abe no Seimei.

A short story published in the magazine "Weekly Shonen King" in September 1974 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Tezuka Osamu's career as a mangaka. It is a semi-autobiographical manga that depicts Tezuka's main character, Tetsuro Osamu, modeled after Tezuka himself, who desperately lives his life with a passion for manga while the war intensifies day by day at the end of the Pacific War. In the postscript to the Kodansha edition of Tezuka Osamu's Complete Manga Collection, Tezuka wrote that the manga "contains a great deal of fiction", but many of the events depicted in the manga are based on his own experiences, which he also wrote about in his essays and other writings.

This One Shot was published in "Weekly Shonen King" as the second part of "Kami no Toride" in January 1975. The war is finally over, but this time a desperate food crisis has come, and Tetsuro Osamu struggle to survive has begun again. Osamu steals potatoes from the fields, draws portraits for the occupation soldiers, and receives sweets in exchange for pocket money. For those who have to make it through the day, even the dead bodies of the dead are out of sight. Although the story is light-hearted and filled with gags, it has a sense of reality that could only have been depicted by someone who actually lived during this period. Initially, Tezuka planned to make this a trilogy of "Kami no Toride", but the third part was never drawn.

Taro, the brother of Yajiro (a mentally handicapped boy), was conducting research to improve the intelligence of animals. His experimental rat Yajiro was released by Yajiro and was named Yaji.
