Handsome Lady

The handsome life of Yae Niijima, the model for the 2013 NHK Taiga Drama! It depicts the strong and beautiful life of an Aizu woman who carried a gun on the battlefield and was called a "female samurai". She learned Western-style gunnery from her elder brother, and in the Boshin War, she herself dressed as a man and fought hard using a Spencer rifle. She was Yae Niijima, known as the "Jeanne d'Arc of the final days of the Tokugawa shogunate". After the surrender of the Aizu Clan, she went to Kyoto in a state of disappointment and underwent a transformation adopting Western-style clothing. In an era of male domination, she insisted on equality between men and women.
