The kingdom of Märchenland, where various characters from fairy tales reside, is attacked by Pierrot, the evil emperor of the Bad End Kingdom, who seeks to direct the world towards its worst ending and steals the Cure Decors, which power the Queen of Märchenland, Royale. Using the last of her energy, Royale manages to seal Pierrot away. However, his minions seek to revive Pierrot by harnessing the Bad Energy from the people of Earth. In order to protect Märchenland and regain her strength, Royale sends out five mystical lights to Earth and orders a fairy named Candy to search for five legendary warriors, the Pretty Cures. Arriving in the town of Nanairogaoka, she encounters Miyuki Hoshizora, a new transfer student, who soon gains the power to become Cure Happy. Using the power of the PreCards and their changing forms, alongside Cure Honey and Cure Fortune, they form the HappinessCharge PreCure team as they are given the task to collect all of the PreCards and defend the Earth against the Phantom Empire.

Haruka Haruno attends the Noble Academy boarding school and cherishes her dreams of becoming a princess. One day, she encounters two fairy creatures from the Hope Kingdom: Pafu and Aroma, who are followed by the monsters created by Dyspear, who wants to bring despair to the world by locking dreams away in the Gate of Desperation. The fairies give Haruka a Princess Perfume and she becomes Cure Flora. Later joined by Minami Kaido and Kirara Amanogawa, as Cure Mermaid and Cure Twinkle, Haruka forms the Princess PreCure Team to collect Dress-Up Keys needed to open the Gate of Dreams while protecting people's dreams from Dys Dark's forces.

Mirai is a 13-year-old girl who lives in the human world. One day she witnesses a mysterious object fall from the sky into the park. Excitedly, she brings her stuffed bear Mofurun with her to see what it was. When she gets there she sees a girl named Riko flying on a broom. Riko is of the same age and from the magical world. Mirai has a lot of questions, and Riko explains that she's searching for a jewel with strong powers called "Link Stone Emerald." Then Batti, an ally of the dark magic users Dokurokushi, appears before them and demands that Riko hand over the "Link Stone Emerald," which Riko herself had been looking for. To make things worse, Batti uses dark magic to create a monster known as a Yokubaru!
