After losing her mother, six-year-old Eva is taken in by the family of her late father’s older brother.
Tormented by loneliness after her mother’s death, Eva finds her only emotional support in the kindness of the household’s son, seven-year-old Sydney Baker.
Ten years pass. Eva grows into a beautiful young woman, sustained solely by her feelings for Sydney, and the two become deeply in love with each other.
However, Sydney’s father does not approve of their relationship and proposes a marriage arrangement between Sydney and Olivia, the daughter of a noble family. Eva’s heart wavers, but Olivia herself has no interest in the engagement. As a result, Sydney ends up reaffirming his feelings for Olivia.
Sydney promises Eva that they will marry after graduation, then leaves for London to attend art school. But eventually, his letters to Eva cease.
