Almark, the son of a mercenary, has known nothing but conflict in the war-torn North. Despite being told that he has an affinity for magic, he chose to hone his combat skills on the battlefield as a child soldier. But his father wishes for him to become a mage in the peaceful southlands, so Almark travels to the Norkh Institute for Magic where he quickly discovers that life in the South is unlike anything he’s ever seen. For one, Southerners view the Northerners as barbarians, a prejudice that may be as insurmountable as the rift between nobles and commoners. It’s summer vacation at the Norkh Institute for Magic, which is when most students go home to their families—except for Almark, who hails from the distant North, and Morgan, whose parents are preoccupied with caring for his younger siblings. So when their friend Wendy invites them to her estate in the capital, the two boys gladly accept! Soon after, however, Wendy sends them a letter revealing that she’s had to flee north because of threats to her family. Undaunted, Almark decides to make the trek anyway. But while en route, he and Morgan learn that several Northern mercenaries are plotting to take Wendy’s life. Do they have what it takes to rescue their beloved classmate…?!
