Yuge Noboru, a fifth-grade elementary school student, cut open a large cucumber he received from his father, and from inside emerged Prince Gappa Donba from the hot spring planet Kapāland. Donba explained that he came to Earth for training and began staying at the Yuge household.

A legend existed in these lands that a hero named Kapārante had once sealed away the Great Sulfur Demon King inside a pot. One day, the Great King of Kapāland Castle opened the pot, releasing the Great Demon King. The Great King dressed his son, Donba, as a hero and ordered him to defeat the Great Sulfur Demon King. Although Donba lacked even the money to buy a weapon, he somehow managed to recruit Takechiyo as a companion. Their journey was a continuous series of hardships, including being sentenced to death by Queen Megūmi of Ureshino Castle for the crime of dining and dashing, but they managed to defeat 129 of the Sulfur Demon Tribe, who were connected to the Great Sulfur Demon King.
