Every day in Japan, 2500 people die due to any number of causes. Do you think you'll be one of the ones to die? No, of course not. Do you think you'll win the lottery? You'd like to think so, we all would. But Sumida is different. 60 years before World War II, mankind found ten alternate worlds that exist but with different other physical laws. The force that supports these alternate worlds is called Concept. At the same time, mankind also discovered that all these alternate worlds are about to collide and the ones without the most amount of Concept will be annihilated. To survive, a world call Low-G, which has no Positive Concepts of its own, started the Concept War to try to secure the most amount of Concepts. It took all the other worlds', called Gs, positive concepts and destroyed them all. All that remains is Low-G. Now 60 years later, which is the present, Low-G is facing destruction because of its Negative Concepts are rapidly expanding. To resolve this, Low-G needs Positive Concepts from all the other alternate worlds. UCAT, the team that destroyed the alternate worlds 60 years ago formed the Team Leviathan to begin negotiation with the survivors from all the other worlds. Mikoto Sayama is the protagonist of the story. After his grandpa, who was a key figure in the Concept War and in the negotiation team, passed away, IAI, UCAT's mother branch in Japan, explained everything to Mikoto and had him take over the negotiation seat. Carrying the phrase "The family name Sayama is villain itself" and all the hatred, young Mikoto begins his negotiation with the other worlds.

The story revolves around the protagonist Hirono Hiro, a poor high school boy who draws shoujo manga for his living. One cold Christmas night after meeting a very strange woman in church, his bike gets stolen by another strange girl. He runs after her and finds her collapsed on the street. Her name is Miyamura Miyako and her bag got stolen by a man on a motorbike. Soon after, they start hanging out together, enjoying highschool life and whatnot. Hiro’s life is also strongly dictated by Shindou Kei, his childhood friend.

Shizuku Ishiai, a second year middle school student, loves dancing, but is bad at expressing herself, so she crossdresses and posts videos of her dances on the popular website "Smile Douga", under the alias "Ai". And she had declared the "dancing prince", Hayate, her rival. But, after a few unexpected events, and her attempts to best him, she's somehow thrown into an idol unit with him; furthermore, a MALE one?! Main story: Chapters 1–44. Sidestories/bonus (related to the main stories): two in volume 2, one in volume 3, one in volume 4, three in volume 5 (one of them with less pages in a sketchy style), two in volume 7, one in volume 8, two in volume 9, two in volume 10 (one of them with less pages, refers directly to the other side story in volume 10), one in volume 11 and one in volume 12. The Star Ocean: The Second Story manga, drawn by Mayumi Azuma, is based upon the Star Ocean: The Second Story video game developed by tri-Ace. It follows the storyline of the game, which follows the exploits of the two protagonists: Claude C. Kenni, a young ensign in the Earth Federation going on his first real mission with his father, and Rena Lanford, a young girl living in the rural village of Arlia on the planet Expel.
