Saya, a young girl in a wheelchair, dreams of playing baseball, her favorite game. At the medical center where she is hospitalized for treatment, she meets Akira, a high school baseball player, but she dies in a car accident on her way to observe Akira's practice. The Shinigami takes pity on Saya, who died so young, and gives her 49 days to live in exchange of his own life. Somewhere in Tokyo, Shiba, an elderly policeman, is assigned to form a special unit together with a cutting-edge android, K. Dr. Kaneda was developing experimental giant robot warriors to fight the allies during the Second World War, but before his creations could see action, Allied bombs destroyed the facility and killed him. A decade later criminals discovered two of the surviving prototypes, #26 and 27 in the series, and used the remote controlled robots to commit a number of crimes. Young Shotaro Kaneda, the twelve year old son of Dr. Kaneda, did some investigating and discovered that the mob were hunting for the twenty-eighth robot in the series, rumoured to be the most powerful of them all. Racing the villains, Shotaro discovers the robot first, along with Dr. Shikishima, a colleague of his father who was also believed to be killed by the Allied bombing. Together the two prevent Tetsujin 28-go (the robot's official designation) from falling into the hands of the bad guys and decide to dedicate him to peace rather than war.
A short manga version of the UFO Robo Grendizer anime. Released along the anime series, UFO Robot Grendizer follows the adventures of Duke Fleed, the Prince of Planet Fleed, whom disguised as Daisuke, a farm worker, fights against the forces that destroyed his planet, the Vegan Empire, also the creators of Grendizer that Duke stole to fight them. While not originaly considered part of the Mazinger series, Koji Kabuto and the Mazinger mechas appear in this series, making it sort of a sequel. Grendizer introduced the concept of a transformable Robot and a space Mecha, concepts that were later taken into other mecha series. It was extremely popular in Japan, Canada, France, Italy and the Arab World and has a strong following in those countries even today.
