While journalist Mike Donovan was filming soldiers in combat in El Salvador, huge UFOs (later called "mother ships") from the Sirius star system, 8.6 light years from the solar system, suddenly appeared in the sky in many places around the world. After making contact for the first time by radio transmission, following a countdown, they agree on a first direct contact with the UN Secretary General. The aliens appear to be human in form and declare that they have come in peace, gradually settling in among the population. They say they want to share their knowledge in exchange for terrestrial chemicals that are supposed to solve their environmental problems on the planet of their star system ("much more serious" than ours).
