The story is set in the year Showa 44 (1969), and it centers around Takanori Jinguuji, the 27-year-old man who eventually become the head of the Japan Shogi Association in the main 3-gatsu no Lion series.
The novel begins in UC 0001, at the very beginning of human space colonization, and is said to cover an as yet unspecified major event that influences the course of human history forever. The main story takes place in UC 0096, three years after the events of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack.
